Distinguished Goodnight Award Recipients for 2020 Announced
Seniors Oscar Molina ’T19 and Gracie Hornsby ’20 are the eighth and ninth recipients of the Distinguished Goodnight Award, which is presented at the end of the academic year to the undergraduate Goodnight Scholar who best embodied the core values and mission of the Goodnight Scholars Program during their time at NC State.
Goodnight Scholars Program Announces Class of 2024 and Transfer Class of 2023
The Goodnight Scholars Program at NC State revealed the 70 students from 34 North Carolina counties selected as its next traditional and transfer scholars. The program will welcome 50 members of the class of 2024 cohort, selected from 850 high school candidates, and 20 members of the transfer class of 2023 cohort, selected from nearly 300 community college candidates.
An Extraordinary Pathway to Success
After graduation, Goodnight Scholars Christian Williams and Oscar Molina are heading in different directions: vet school at the College of Veterinary Medicine and a role at Deutsche Bank. Both of these next steps were made possible through the Goodnight Scholars Program’s transfer pathway, created in 2017 to provide extraordinary opportunities for community college graduates across North Carolina.
Goodnight Spotlight: Ethan Jenkins
Goodnight Scholar Ethan Jenkins, a member of transfer cohort class of 2022, is living his dream at NC State. An agricultural education major, he looks forward to giving back to his rural Columbus County community after graduation.
Goodnight Scholars Program Selects Finalists for Transfer Class of 2023
The Goodnight Scholars Program at NC State University revealed 41 finalists who will participate in the program’s first-ever virtual interview at the end of April. From this process, 20 students will be invited to join the Transfer Class of 2023.
Goodnight Scholar Alex Rojas ’20 is applying skills developed in the scholarship program to an internship at BioMedomics, where he leads a team assembling and shipping out boxes of rapid COVID-19 tests.
Goodnight Spotlight: Kaleb Lee
Through the Black Male Initiative Living and Learning Village and the Goodnight Scholars Program, Moncure native Kaleb Lee '21 has developed meaningful relationships at NC State.
An Inspiring Spring Break
Every year, more than 20 teams of NC State students, accompanied by faculty and staff, fan out around the world to work with partner organizations and communities on a wide variety of projects. The university’s Alternative Service Break (ASB) program, which got its start in 1999, provides a service-based alternative to the stereotypical ways of spending spring, fall and winter breaks, with groups participating in two dozen domestic and international locations. Scholarship funds support some participants.
Goodnight Scholar Admitted into 2020 Cohort of Knight-Hennessy Scholars
Goodnight Scholar Gracie Hornsby has accumulated numerous accolades as she devoted her undergraduate career to issues of global water, sanitation and hygiene. She can now add one more honor to the list: Knight-Hennessy Scholar. Knight-Hennessy Scholars receive full funding to pursue any graduate degree at Stanford and enjoy additional opportunities for leadership training, mentorship and experiential learning across multiple disciplines.
Becoming the Educator She Wants to Be
Kyanna “Kay” Sumpter '22 is a Goodnight Scholar and member of the College of Education's first Global Educators Program cohort. She gives back to NC State in honor of private support's influence on her own college experience.
