Immersive Oncology: NC State Hopes New Clinical Experience Broadens Understanding, Horizons

Mike Nolan, professor of radiation oncology, spearheaded the creation of NC State’s first Immersive Clinical Experience this summer, a new program designed to help first- and second-year veterinary students from universities across the country explore important medical specialties they could pursue as careers. NC State was able to provide each student with a stipend from philanthropic donations to the radiation oncology program and with additional financial support from the college.

Researchers Identify a New Genetic Culprit in Canine Bladder Cancers

Researchers have identified new genetic mutations linked to a subset of canine bladder cancers, which will have implications for early cancer detection and for targeted treatments in dogs and humans. Matthew Breen, Oscar J. Fletcher Distinguished Professor of Comparative Oncology Genetics at NC State, is a corresponding author of the research.

NC State’s R. Stanhope Pullen Society celebrates Pack members who have made a planned gift supporting the university through their wills, trusts, IRA rollovers and more. This year’s induction event was held in historic Reynolds Coliseum and included a special tie-in with the men’s basketball team’s 1983 NCAA Championship win.

NC State’s New Standing CT a Game-Changer for Equine Care

Thanks to donor support, the NC State Veterinary Hospital has installed standing CT equipment that allows equine experts to scan the heads and throat latches of horses without having to put the animals under general anesthesia.

NC Horse Council Helps NC State Care for On-Campus Herds

The NC Horse Council has awarded a grant to the College of Veterinary Medicine to help the college care for its on-campus horses that participate in the advancement of equine health and translational medicine. This is the council’s first grant to the college specifically for the care and maintenance of animals.

Leafing Through History: Mining DNA Clues From Centuries-Old Manuscripts

Since early 2021, an intercollege, interdisciplinary team of NC State researchers including Oscar J. Fletcher Distinguished Professor of Comparative Oncology Genetics Matthew Breen has been using modern scientific techniques to mine genetic clues from old manuscripts. The team is supported by $25,000 in Research and Innovation Seed Funding from the university and has analyzed DNA from 91 parchment manuscripts so far in a collaborative project that links the humanities and the sciences.
