Jason Bocarro Named Owens-Shelton Distinguished Professor

Funded through a generous gift from three-time NC State alumnus and former chair of the Board of Trustees James “Jim” Owens, the professorship will support Bocarro as he teaches interdisciplinary coursework and conducts research on topics related to leadership.

Forestry Student Mary Marriott Awarded Prestigious Scholarship

Mary Marriott, a junior majoring in forest management in the College of Natural Resources, has been awarded the Nicholas M. Curtis Memorial Scholarship Endowment from the North Carolina Forestry Association. Marriott has also received the J.M. and Sally B. Beard Forestry Endowed Scholarship and the Eldon M. and Leola P. Estep Natural Resources Endowed Scholarship Award during her time at NC State.

Generous Gift to the College of Natural Resources Will Fund International Studies for Forestry Students

Lee and Sunny Allen, educators who have dedicated the bulk of their academic lives and love to NC State, have created an endowment that will enable students to learn about ecosystems, wildlife and forestry operations around the world. The Allen International Travel Endowment provides support for undergraduate and/or graduate students pursuing a degree in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources who want to travel internationally — especially those traveling overseas for the first time.

Nicholson Scholarship Supports First-Generation Paper Science Students

The Bart and Pam Nicholson Endowed Scholarship, established by its namesakes in 2021, provides financial support for first-generation students in the paper science and engineering program who have completed their first year in the College of Natural Resources and who belong to historically underserved or marginalized populations.

Ivana Mali Named Distinguished Scholar for Conservation Biology

Ivana Mali, an associate professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, has been named the Ecology Wildlife Foundation Distinguished Scholar for Conservation Biology. The position was recently created through a generous gift from the Ecology Wildlife Foundation, a donor-advised fund dedicated to supporting organizations in North Carolina that encourage environmental conservation and education.

New CNR Program Aims to Grow Tomorrow’s Leaders

The new James Buzzard Leadership Development Program, which is expected to launch in the spring of 2023, is a year-long program targeting upper-level undergraduates who are within three semesters of graduation. The program was established through a gift to the College of Natural Resources by the late James “Jim” Buzzard, a 1976 pulp and paper technology alumnus, and will provide students with cumulative leadership experiences such as the CNR Student Ambassadors, Shelton Leadership, Sustainability Steward or similar programs.

CNR Names New Assistant Dean for College Advancement

Jennifer Piercy has been selected as the College of Natural Resources’ new assistant dean for college advancement and president of the NC State Natural Resources Foundation. The CNR alumnus brings 10 years of board management, fundraising, alumni relations, communications, leadership and management experience to this position and was instrumental in closing several major gifts to the college during the Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign.
