Angela C. Caraway Family Scholarship a Dream Come True

Angela Caraway '95 has stayed connected to NC State through her work as the event planner for Packapalooza, and as a board member for the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity and for the National Diversity Advisory Board. She recently furthered that connection by establishing the Caraway Family Scholarship to support first-generation students from North Carolina's rural counties. A combination of planned and annual gifts helped Caraway realize her dream of honoring her family in this way.

Alum Tyler Allen Reflects on His Time with Multicultural Student Affairs

Tyler Allen '14, '18 was a chancellor's aide, president of the Graduate Student Association, a Fraternity and Sorority Life resident director and a Three-Minute Thesis Winner during his time earning two degrees at NC State. Allen, named one of Forbes' 30 Under 30 in 2018, made one of his first university connections via his work-study job at Multicultural Student Affairs. He believes that investing in centers like this one through the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity represents an investment in the entire campus community.

Endowment Honors Alumnus Who Valued Education and the Power of Scholarships

Alumnus Frank Madren’s love of electrical engineering and computer science was surpassed only by his love for his wife of 55 years, Jo Ann Madren. Three years after Frank passed away in 2015, Jo Ann honored his memory by endowing a merit-based scholarship at NC State in his name. The Frank Simpson Madren Scholarship Endowment is for undergraduate students in the College of Engineering with preference given to those with demonstrated financial need.

CNR Alumni Spotlight: Tyson Chandler

Former NC State student-athlete Tyson Chandler graduated in 2014 with a degree in parks, recreation and tourism management. A three-year starter in football, Chandler recently co-founded Overtime Athletics – Triangle along with fellow PRTM alumnus T.Y. McGill, to encourage fitness, self-esteem, teamwork and more among elementary school students.

Entrepreneurs Flexing with the Times

Park Scholar alumna and entrepreneur Emily Neville is ensuring her company, Reborn Clothing Co., stays people-focused during the pandemic. Neville is spearheading the Triangle Bundle Project, through which North Carolinians can buy bundles of products to support local businesses, and donating 15% of proceeds of her company's T-shirt sales to help the Carolina Textile District produce PPE for those on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis.

Alums Encourage Using Stimulus Checks to Help Others

Recognizing that some people receiving federal stimulus checks don’t need that money to make ends meet, 2013 NC State graduate Kevin Miller wondered if there was a smart way to encourage people to give some of it to a worthy cause. So Miller teamed up with a handful of other alums, many of them Caldwell Fellows like him, to launch a website to make it easy for people to contribute to nonprofits helping those struggling as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Doctor is In

For Dr. Linda Butler, there are no normal days. As vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at UNC REX Healthcare in Raleigh, Butler — a College of Engineering alumna and board member for the NC State Engineering Foundation — is responsible for quality and performance improvement, infection prevention, risk management, research and medical staff affairs for a system with more than 7,400 staff members and multiple facilities including Raleigh’s oldest hospital.
