Meet the 2020 Mathews Medal Winners
NC State's highest nonacademic distinction for students, the Mathews Medal, recognizes graduating seniors who will leave the university a better place because of their service, commitment and leadership. This year's medalists are Resident Adviser Council founder Kevin Hogan, Alumni Association Student Ambassador Program president Mary Kate Morgan, NC State's NAACP chapter president Malasia McClendon and Feed the Pack executive director Jayna Lennon.
Goodnight Scholars Program Selects Finalists for Transfer Class of 2023
The Goodnight Scholars Program at NC State University revealed 41 finalists who will participate in the program’s first-ever virtual interview at the end of April. From this process, 20 students will be invited to join the Transfer Class of 2023.
COVID-19’s Unique Impacts on Survivors of Interpersonal Violence
Survivors of interpersonal violence are experiencing unique impacts of COVID-19. The Women’s Center at NC State has seen a rise in students seeking support from trained advocates as well as significantly more applications to the Survivor Fund, which can cover related expenses, such as medical care, counseling, legal assistance, loss of employment, transportation, relocation and/or safety upgrades to housing. Gifts to the Survivor Fund help meet this increased and ongoing need.
An Extraordinary Opportunity in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Taylor Rhodes came to NC State as a Spring Connect student and took part in Student Transition Enrollment Advising and Mentoring (STEAM), a program to make higher education more accessible to rural students interested in majors related to agriculture. She then became the first-ever recipient of the Gordon Family Farm-to-Philanthropy Program scholarship established through a transformational gift from alumni Joseph and Deborah Kapp Gordon.
Hobbs Receives Jackson Rigney International Service Award
Heidi Hobbs of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences was chosen as this year's winner of the Jackson Rigney International Service Award, the highest honor for global engagement at NC State. The award is funded through the Jackson A. Rigney International Endowment in the NC State University Foundation that honors the memory of an outstanding 40-year faculty member. Hobbs is director of the Master of International Studies Program in the School of Public and International Affairs and associate professor of political science.
COVID-19 Impacts First-Generation Students
Campus changes to mitigate the spread of coronavirus have impacted students everywhere, but many first-generation students face added obstacles. Joselyn Ramirez-Mendoza, a junior at NC State, is one such student adjusting to a new normal. She hopes others will take advantage of resources the university offers such as Feed the Pack food pantry, the Student Emergency Fund, the Libraries and the Counseling Center.
Meet Park Scholar Annie Haunton
Annie Haunton is working with the Institute for Emerging Issues on its Service Year NC project, just one area of her campus involvement. She plans to graduate in 2022 in biological sciences, integrative physiology and neurobiology.
