Preserving History, Creating Opportunity

Fueled by their passion for Native American culture, Belinda and John Hester (’72) have established a scholarship at NC State. The John F. Hester Scholarship provides support for undergraduates enrolled in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and majoring or minoring in history. Priority is given to students who are underrepresented in the student body or students who have demonstrated interest in Native American heritage.

Cunane Gains AP Third Team All-American Status

NC State sophomore women's basketball player Elissa Cunane continued to add to her list of honors for the 2019-20 season as she earned Associated Press Third Team All-American recognition. Cunane is the first Wolfpack women's basketball player ever chosen for a spot on one of the three AP All-American teams.

Mathematician Bociu Receives Faculty Diversity Professional Development Award

Lorena Bociu, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics at NC State, is the 2019-20 recipient of the College of Sciences Faculty Diversity Professional Development Award. She was selected for her outstanding contributions to promoting diversity among students and faculty as well as her significant achievements in teaching, research and outreach. Created by a private gift to the college, the award supports professional development opportunities for mid- and early-career faculty.

Partner Profile: DSM

As doctors and scientists continue to study how the community of microbes that inhabit our gut impact human health, other researchers are exploring the importance of the gut microbiome on animals. Two institutions studying animal gut health and nutrition — NC State and DSM Nutritional Products, a global science-based company focused on nutrition, health and sustainable living — recently signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance their research partnership. Specific partners are the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Diversity in STEM Symposium Highlights Inclusive Spaces

About 300 people from across NC State and the Triangle attended the College of Sciences’ second Diversity in STEM Symposium in February. The theme of the event, sponsored by BASF and featuring many alumni speakers, was “Creating Inclusive Spaces."

NC State Makes Strong Showing on ‘Power 100’ List

Chancellor Randy Woodson and a number of NC State donors and volunteers landed spots on Business North Carolina’s “Power 100” list, which, according to the magazine, cites “influential folks who are making a significant impact in their enterprises, industries and, in many cases, the broader community.” Other were named to the magazine's supplemental “icons” list of senior business leaders.

Study Shows CRISPR Effectiveness Against Colitis Pathogen

Research at NC State demonstrates that the CRISPR-Cas system can be used to effectively target and eliminate specific gut bacteria, in this case Clostridioides difficile, the pathogen that causes colitis – a chronic, degenerative disease of the colon. In a proof-of-concept study published in the journal mBio, researchers including Rodolphe Barrangou, Todd R. Klaenhammer Distinguished Professor of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, were able to show pathogen reductions in experiments conducted both on the lab bench and in mice.

Poole Senior Launches Accessory Clothing Line

Derrick Dreier, a senior in business administration with a concentration in finance, has always been interested in fashion and apparel. His passion and business background led him to create Visus, an accessories apparel line, and his many NC State activities include the Student Philanthropy Council at Poole College of Management.
