Remembering Tom Banks

H. Thomas Banks, Distinguished University Professor, LeRoy B. Martin Jr. Distinguished Professor and associate director of the Center for Research in Scientific Computation, passed away at the age of 79 on Dec. 31. In addition to his exceptional scientific achievements, including over 550 peer-reviewed publications, a hallmark of Banks' intellectual efforts during his career was the education and training of young mathematicians and scientists. Indeed, more than 50 graduate students and 40 postdoctoral scholars have benefited from his scientific wisdom and mentorship.

Understanding Neurodiversity

Dr. Monique Colclough is a postdoctoral scholar researching the best ways to support students who have autism, as institutions rethink how student success is defined and measured. She finds that her work is a natural fit with the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research, established at NC State's College of Education with a $10.86 million grant from the John M. Belk Endowment.

Fusing Disciplines, Transforming Graduate Education

The Agricultural Biotechnology in Food, Energy and Water Systems program is showing graduate students the full spectrum of issues in biotech and genetic engineering, from the lab, to the field, to the public square. And it’s an approach that could inform how we seek solutions to other grand challenges, explains Jennifer Kuzma, Goodnight-NC GSK Foundation Distinguished Professor in the School of Public and International Affairs and co-director of the Genetic Engineering and Society Center.

Park Scholar Named a 2019-2020 Social Innovation Fellow

Hannah Bain ’20 was selected as a 2019-20 Social Innovation Fellow. The yearlong program enables innovators at NC State to learn and practice social entrepreneurship by working in teams to create and launch a project that seeks to achieve positive social impact. Bain sees a connection between her experiences as a Social Innovation Fellow and as a Park Scholar, both of which have challenged her to tackle questions and issues that can't be solved with answers from a textbook. She is learning how to solve real-life issues, ask the right questions and work effectively on interdisciplinary teams.
