Paying Kindness Forward

As the seventh of nine children, middle grades education major Helena Boehling '21 has had to support herself financially. Receiving the Chuck W. and Nadine P. Edwards Excellence Scholarship for the past two years and the Replogle Family Scholarship during her freshman year has helped ease the financial stress of attending NC State. The support has allowed her to “receive the education I can pay forward to my students in the future.”

By day, Sejal Patel '06 serves as the director of pricing for a multinational health information technology and clinical research company, but after hours he is an ambitious entrepreneur about to open his eclectic restaurant, The Nomad. Patel gives back to Poole College of Management by volunteering as a partner to a student project in the Entrepreneurship Clinic.

Cultural Immersion Makes an Impression

Modesty Obasohan ’20, a Park Scholar majoring in genetics and minoring in Spanish, always knew she wanted to study abroad. Obasohan realized this goal by enrolling in NC State’s study abroad program at the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) in Cholula, Mexico, in fall 2018.

Why I Give: ‘I Want Future Teachers to Have the Same Opportunity’

Cathy and Ron Hairr treasure the education they received at NC State, but paying for school often interfered with time for studying, and they were unable to experience semesters abroad. They have established a gift through their estate that will be shared equally between NC State’s College of Education and College of Engineering to provide need-based scholarships so future teachers and engineers can take full advantage of opportunities at the university.

Two Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty Members Named Distinguished Professors

NC State has named two College of Humanities and Social Sciences faculty members as distinguished professors, a title bestowed on scholars who are considered to be at the top of their fields and whose work is known nationally and internationally. Communication professor Joann Keyton and psychology professor Douglas J. Gillan both received the honor.

SECU Foundation Offers New Internships for NC State Students

Through funding from the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Foundation, NC State students will be serving rural communities in North Carolina while gaining valuable career experience this summer. The new SECU Public Fellows Internship Program provides up to $50,000 to fund 10 existing internships in 2020. In partnership with NC State’s Rural Works! program, SECU Public Fellows will receive professional development training and career readiness coaching.
