NC State Dining Offers Students an Opportunity to Donate Guest Meals to Help Classmates

For the second year in a row, students can donate their extra guest swipes starting December 2 to the Pack Meal Share program. The donated swipes are redistributed to students who are experiencing food insecurities. Almost 1500 swipes have been redistributed this fall and last spring semester from previous donations. This semester’s goal is to reach 1500 donated guest swipes. Students can donate swipes until the goal is met or until Dec. 22.

The Goodnight Scholars Program invests in students from low- and middle-income families in North Carolina studying in STEM or STEM education disciplines. The program's annual report highlights a decade's worth of transformations, including an increase in education majors; greater inclusivity of nonwhite, rural and/or first-generation students; and larger classes of first-year and transfer scholars.

Veterans on the Farm

The number of military veterans taking part in the North Carolina Farm School, an annual NC State Extension program that helps new and aspiring growers learn more about agriculture, is on the rise. The program, which has been supported by individual donors and groups like the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, is aimed at increasing sustainable and economically viable farms in the state.

Carbon Electronics Cluster Opens New Facility

NC State inaugurated a new carbon electronics laboratory in November, formally launching a state-of-the-art facility on Centennial Campus that brings together scientists and engineers from across the university to do cutting-edge work in this emerging field. The 6,000-square-foot Organic and Carbon Electronics Labs (ORaCEL) is part of the carbon electronics cluster, one of 20 such interdisciplinary groups in the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program. This cluster was launched by Harald Ade, Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics, and is currently co-led by Franky So, Walter and Ida Freeman Distinguished Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Phil Castellano, Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Chair in the Department of Chemistry.

Three NC State innovators in the fields of food safety and computer networking have been recognized by the National Academy of Inventors: Rodolphe Barrangou, Todd R. Klaenhammer Distinguished Professor in Probiotics Research; Kenneth R. Swartzel, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences; and Carlos Pignataro, an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. College of Education Celebrates Grand Opening of Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research

On Dec. 3, the College of Education held an opening reception for its Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research, the result of a $10.86 million grant from the John M. Belk Endowment in 2018. With the launch of the center, the College of Education has expanded its ability to support community colleges in three ways: furthering the preparation of future community college presidents, providing ongoing leadership development to community college executives and trustees, and building capacity for evidence-based decision-making and applied research.
