‘Soft Tactile Logic’ Tech Distributes Decision-making throughout Stretchable Material

Inspired by octopuses, researchers including Michael Dickey, NC State's Alcoa Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, have developed a structure that senses, computes and responds without centralized processing — creating a device that is not quite a robot and not quite a computer, but has characteristics of both. The new technology holds promise for use in a variety of applications, from soft robotics to prosthetic devices.

Exploring New Routes

NC State's new Wellness and Recreation Center is expected to open in fall of 2020. With outdoor training areas, a teaching kitchen, a sprint ramp and a signature, 48-foot-tall climbing center, the facility will play a critical role in providing new ways for students to enjoy a well-rounded campus experience. Naming opportunities are available now and provide a unique opportunity to further invest in student success.

Improving the Odds for a Cat Named Otter

Otter the cat is making friends across the oncology unit as she undergoes treatment at NC State Veterinary Hospital. When full-course radiation therapy was recommended to Otter's owners, Melissa Tran and Jeremy Mey, they wanted to do whatever was possible to limit the recurrence of their pet's soft tissue sarcoma. Assistance from the Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo Cancer Treatment Fund is helping defray the cost of Otter's care so her family can focus on her health rather than finances.

Keep the Faith, Finish the Tower

The Memorial Belltower has a history that is almost hard to believe. Built to honor the NC State alumni killed in World War I, the 115-foot Legend in Stone has always been missing a final piece: real bells. Through countless hours of research and years of effort, several NC State alumni became passionate about finishing NC State’s most iconic symbol as a way to honor those who paid the ultimate price.
