Exceptional Care for an Endlessly Supportive Friend

Sarah Blume's Labrador retriever mix Amelia has been a member of the family since she was a puppy. When Amelia was diagnosed with lymphoma, Blume was faced with the difficulty of affording treatment and travel on her disability income. Generous support from the Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo Cancer Treatment Fund has helped alleviate the cost of treatment for Blume and other clients at NC State Veterinary Hospital.

Edgington Named Park Scholarship Faculty Scholar

Cyndi Edgington, a teaching assistant professor of STEM education at the College of Education, has been selected as a Park Faculty Scholar for the Park Scholarships program. She will work with the incoming class of Park Scholars by guiding enrichment activities and advising students.

Soybeans are one of the leading crops in the United States, and a fast-growing population is expected to increase demand for the crop as a protein source for animal and human nutrition. New soybean research with roots in the North Carolina Plant Sciences Initiative aims to protect the crop from climate change.

Big Cats in the Backyard: Master’s Research Reveals Important Finding About Human-Leopard Interactions

Supported in part by a University Graduate Fellowship, Matt Snider recently earned a master's degree from NC State's College of Natural Resources. The fisheries, wildlife and conservation biology major has become a bit of an expert at tracking one of nature's most elusive creatures: the leopard. Snider's thesis revealed important information about how humans are impacting wildlife populations.

NC State Launches Minor in Global Leadership and Team Decision Making

The minor open to all NC State undergraduates features 12 hours earned abroad during a spring semester program taking place in three European countries and co-taught by an interdisciplinary faculty team from the university and its partner institutions. Debbie Acker, senior associate director for operations and academic programs for the Shelton Leadership Center, led development and partnership-building for the unique minor; philanthropy enables more students to participate.

New Tool Tackles Uncertainty in Military Logistics Planning

Military deployments – whether humanitarian missions or combat operations – to austere environments involve extensive logistical planning, which is often complicated by unforeseen events. Researchers centered in NC State's Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering have created a model to help military leaders better account for logistical risk and uncertainty during operational planning and execution.

Over the past year, almost two dozen women at the Wilson College of Textiles, including students, faculty and staff, have benefited from professional development grants through the Ellen Rohde Leadership Initiative. Opportunities including conference travel, workshops, networking and research are made possible through an endowed gift from Rhode, who serves on the North Carolina Textile Foundation Board of Directors.
