Insight into the Dawn of the Computer Age

NCSU Libraries Special Collections Research Center is excited to announce the donation of the Brian W. Hollocks Collection to the Computer Simulation Archive. Hollocks is a retired professor from Bournemouth University in the United Kingdom, and the collection of 1960s through 1980s materials offers a snapshot of the early years of the computer industry as it found large-scale applications in postwar industry and business, leading to the dawn of personal computers.

CVM Study to Use Innovative Cancer Detection Tool, Seeks Participants

A clinical study launching at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine is targeting a common canine cancer that is difficult to treat. The CADET BRAF, the world’s first liquid biopsy to detect cancer in dogs, was developed in the lab of Matthew Breen, CVM professor of genomics and the Oscar J. Fletcher Distinguished Professor of Comparative Oncology Genetics.

Johnson Named Executive Director of Friday Institute and Associate Dean

Carla C. Johnson has been named as executive director of the Friday Institute and associate dean at the NC State College of Education, effective July 1. In this role, she will provide strategic direction and leadership for the institute, including expanding and sustaining its success and operation in North Carolina and beyond. More than 100 faculty, staff and graduate students at the Friday Institute work across project teams supported by $17 million-plus in grants, contracts, state funding and gifts.

From Rio to Raleigh

Olympic swimmer Ryan Held is comfortable dealing with pressure. His strength was tested at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, where he and fellow teammates brought home a relay gold medal. His strength was tested again as he completed an internship at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Private support for NC State athletics helps shape the college experience for student-athletes like Held, who recently graduated from the College of Natural Resources.

A Winning Start: College of Design Alum Wins Apprenticeship with Adidas

Alumnus Chris Williams is heading for the West Coast and a footwear design apprenticeship at Adidas after winning one of three spots in a competition against 1,000 other designers in the international Adidas Design Academy competition. Williams, who participated in the Entrepreneurship Initiative while on campus as a College of Design student, will head to Portland, Oregon, this fall.

From Factory Floor to First-Generation College Student . . . To Graduation

An inspiring story culminated last month as Selena Ibarra celebrated her graduation in animal science. A former factory worker in Sampson County, oldest of 11 siblings and the first in her family to attend college, the Bone Scholar earned her way through the Agricultural Institute in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Park Scholarships Names Semifinalists

Nearly 500 talented high school seniors have been selected as semifinalists for NC State's prestigious Park Scholarships program Class of 2023. Approximately 112 finalists will be selected over the next month, and the Class of 2023 will be announced in May.
