A Professor Gives Back to Chemistry

In the classroom, Carl Bumgardner, professor emeritus of chemistry at NC State, was known for his generous spirit. He has continued his investment in chemistry students by establishing the Ann Bumgardner and Myrtle Bumgardner Scholarship, which honors his late wife, Ann, and his sister, Myrtle.

Defining the Future of CRISPR

Food scientist Rodolphe Barrangou has advanced genetic research across a wide range of fields, but his masterpiece, CRISPR, is one of the hottest buzzwords in science today. The Todd R. Klaenhammer Distinguished Professor in Probiotics Research and his team have been using different CRISPR sequences to vaccinate dairy bacteria against thousands of common dairy viruses.

Shining a Light on the Invisible Problem of Food and Housing Insecurity

Earlier this year, NC State researcher and psychology professor Mary Haskett found that one in seven students on campus had experienced food insecurity in the last 30 days. One in 10 had experienced housing insecurity in the last 12 months. Donors can help support students facing these challenges, through gifts to the Feed the Pack food pantry and the Student Emergency Fund, for example.

Former University Scholar Veronica Catete has always loved computers, and she has been sharing that love with under-served groups for years. Working on a joint initiative between NC State's computer science department and the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, Catete is working to help integrate computing into K-12 STEM courses by training teachers to use computational thinking activities in their classrooms.
