Space Still Awaits

It’s been almost five years since Christina Hammock Koch was chosen by NASA to be an astronaut. The NC State alumna, among the guest speakers at Red and White Night: A Celebration of Philanthropy last fall, is staying busy with training and outreach efforts while she waits for her first mission -- likely a stint on the International Space Station.

New Leader Begins Tenure in University Advancement

Jim Broschart has joined NC State as its new associate vice chancellor of university development, following a national search. In his new role, Broschart provides direct supervision to the University Development division of University Advancement, including the offices of annual giving, gift planning, corporate and foundation relations, and central major gifts, as well as development teams in those colleges with direct reporting relationships to University Development.

Solar Vehicle Team Project Takes Unusual Route, Adding Business Students

A team of more than 40 undergraduate and graduate students from NC State's colleges of engineering, design and management are designing a solar car focusing on practicality, performance and energy efficiency. Corporate sponsors, including Toshiba, Geo Renewables, Imagineering and Autodesk, are among the project's supporters.

Barrangou to Receive Another Prestigious Honor

Dr. Rodolphe Barrangou, the Todd R. Klaenhammer Distinguished Scholar in Probiotics Research, University Scholar and associate professor in NC State's Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, will receive the 2018 National Academy of Sciences Prize in Food and Agriculture Sciences for his discovery of the genetic mechanisms and proteins driving CRISPR-Cas systems.

Joseph Brazel, Jenkins Distinguished Professor of Accounting and University Faculty Scholar in NC State's Poole College of Management, received the Notable Contribution to the Auditing Literature Award at the 2018 AAA Auditing Section Midyear Meeting in Portland, Oregon.

Researching Ethics in Counseling with an Aim to Help Others

Walter H. Wilkinson Graduate Fellowship recipient Latonya Graham's dissertation explores the understanding and application of the revision to the latest American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics relating to confidentiality and privacy. A background in public health inspired the NC State student's work.

Luke Huffines spent his summer working on Ted Turner's Vermejo Park ranch, making valuable connections, developing leadership skills and exploring possible career paths. The forest management major’s studies and hands-on experiences have been enhanced by a College of Agriculture and Life Sciences scholarship and CNR's Ron and Dale Terry Student Assistance and Enrichment Fund.

VF Corporation and NC State Announce Strategic, Multiyear Partnership

NC State and VF Corporation have announced a collaborative, strategic partnership that will support student development at NC State and advance apparel and textiles innovation within VF. The College of Textiles and VF have a long-standing relationship. Under this new multiyear agreement, the partnership is further strengthened by Poole College of Management, which brings particular expertise in business analytics and supply chain management.

Stefanski Named Head of Statistics

Leonard “Len” Stefanski, a longtime NC State professor and prominent statistician, has been named the new head of the university’s Department of Statistics. In this role, Stefanski, the R.A. Fisher Distinguished Professor of Statistics, oversees academic, administrative and budgetary matters for around 400 students and 42 faculty.
