Tony Adams, senior from Charlotte, majoring in sport management, scholarship student-athlete, NC State football (starting offensive guard)

The most extraordinary thing about this university is all the opportunities that it presents. Along with the wonderful academics, NC State has allowed me to venture into different outlets, such as music and leadership development.

I have been involved in football for close to 10 years because of passion and love for the game.

There is no better opportunity to develop good life habits and friendships than being a part of a team, especially the Wolfpack, and we get the opportunity to be a role model for kids.

I am actually originally from Boston. NC State was my only NCAA Division I scholarship offer, and it ended up being the best decision of my life to pursue an athletic career here. I chose my major because I have strong aspirations to become an athletics director at a Division I college – preferably NC State!

NC State has so many available platforms to mold any young mind into a successful, thinking one. I’ve been able to explore different areas like music, with its piano and music production classes. The many extracurricular activities and clubs allow students to broaden their horizons and network with many others who may have the same ideals and goals.

I have been involved in leadership development opportunities, which include the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Leadership Council for the NC State football team. These endeavors have allowed me to experience a true leadership role and understand how to lead a team and develop leaders within that team to be successful.

The most impactful class I have taken probably was David Carter’s PRT 466 sport finance and economics course. This summer session course in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management was wonderful in all aspects of teaching us how to handle life circumstances when it comes to money, whether in business or personal sectors.

I have been involved in football for close to 10 years because of the pure passion and love for the game. Football can make a wonderful impact in general. Whether you’re playing, or just a huge fan, the overall passion for the game and the chance to be part of a team can change someone’s life.

The most important aspect of being part of this university is being role models to the hundreds of kids that look up to you. I have had a wonderful opportunity to mentor a child who attends Swift Creek Elementary School for the past three years. That experience has taught me so many things and helped me realize how influential we are, just by being athletes at an NCAA Division I school. This perspective allowed me to understand that the impact you make, on the field and off, can affect many people around you and cause people to be inspired to do what you do on a weekly basis.

The most impactful game I have been part of was the hurricane game against Notre Dame last season. It was an epic game I will never forget because of how we implemented a successful run game and showed dominance upfront in the trenches.

Having only NC State offer a scholarship gave me a chip on my shoulder as far as other schools that looked past me when it came to the recruiting process. The joys of beating up on teams like UNC and Wake Forest are so much sweeter because they understand now that they passed on an in-state kid passionate for the game of football.

After graduation I envision training for the NFL. Otherwise, I plan on staying in the university’s athletics department and working with people I aspire to be like one day. Whether it’s coaching or being a part of administration, we have great teachers of the game and people who are great at what they do at NC State, so it would be wonderful to learn from them and help my aspirations to be a great athletics director to come into fruition down the road.

One more thing. It might surprise people to know that tennis is my first love. I have been playing since I was 2 years old. If anyone wants to get beat on any surface, just hit my email. I am very confident in my game.
