Researchers Work to Limit Weaving Process Downtime

An invention from NC State textiles researchers could solve a knotty problem in weaving plants: stopping looms to tie in new threads when yarn runs out. The research, funded with a grant of $574,000 from the Walmart U.S. Manufacturing Innovation Fund, is part of a five-year effort to improve competitiveness and create jobs.

Stancil Named to Leadership Post

Daniel D. Stancil, Alcoa Distinguished Professor and department head of electrical and computer engineering at NC State, has been named president of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association, a nonprofit membership organization comprised of decision makers at nearly 300 institutions across North America and Canada.

A Legacy of Discovery and Healing

The first major gift to the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1983 established the Jane A. and Raymond C. Firestone Research Laboratory Suite. Since that time, hundreds upon hundreds of studies, important academic papers and groundbreaking advancements in medicine have been born and come to fruition in the suite, which continues to support the work of leaders like Mark Papich, Burroughs Wellcome Fund Professor of veterinary pharmacology, and Duncan Lascelles, professor of small animal surgery and pain management.

Led by top faculty including Ruben Carbonell, Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering, NC State is directly involved in seven of the 14 public-private institutes that make up the Manufacturing USA network — the most involvement of any university in the country. Launched in 2015, the network focuses on various fields of technology with the goal of securing the future of manufacturing in the U.S. through innovation, collaboration and education.
