Building on Our Legacy

NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson outlines his vision for the Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign.

NC State has always been an institution that thinks big and gets things done. Every day, we translate scholarly discovery into practical, real-world applications. Our founders might marvel at today’s university, but they would recognize the mission that drives us.

Although the past few years have been difficult for public education nationwide, thanks to the think-and-do spirit that has been part of our DNA since the start, NC State has been building momentum.

We are often recognized as among the best values in education. Our students’ academic credentials and performance are rising, and our graduates are in demand. With carefully targeted faculty hiring, we are breaking down barriers between academic disciplines — increasing collaboration to address global challenges in big data, clean energy, forensic sciences, geospatial analytics, precision medicine and more.

At a time when the world cries out for relevancy, NC State is more relevant than ever.

Over the next five years, the Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign will unleash our enormous potential. Our $1.6 billion fundraising goal is ambitious, but achieving it is critical.

To advance our academic program and research enterprise, we need to invest in people. Our strategic goals require recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty and ensuring that talented students can attend NC State — where real-world experiences enable them to graduate poised to succeed. The physical transformation of our campus, which provides the infrastructure for excellence, must continue. We have to grow our endowment, the bedrock of our future.

I want our students, faculty and staff, alumni and friends to understand: Your support is the key. By partnering with us, you transform the future of this university, our state and the world. We are grateful for the public funding that has sustained us, but we cannot settle for good. Donors supply the power that moves NC State’s needle to great. When your commitment and passion intersect with our priorities, this university cannot be stopped.

The Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign will inspire different thinking — elevated, energetic thinking about who we are and who we want to be. We want the world to know about the remarkable things happening here. And across every college, program and unit, we want to engage our community in new ways — to consider where this university is going and the resources needed to get there.

NC State will be a different place at the end of this Campaign. It will change the way outsiders view us, and it will change the way we view ourselves. We will continue to meet our purpose, creating economic, societal and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and beyond, but with sharpened focus and increased impact.

Bigger dreams. Greater confidence. Bolder actions.

We are authentic. The work we do here matters. We have much to be proud of, and I am excited about what comes next. Together, with this Campaign, we will build on our legacy, expand our horizons and lead NC State into an extraordinary future.

Sincerely,
Randy Woodson
