Dale E. Sayers Memorial Fund

In 2004, the popular and widely respected professor Dale Sayers died unexpectedly. His wife, Anne, and his former students and colleagues joined to give $225,000 to establish the Dale E. Sayers Memorial Fund in honor of his memory. The fund will support a graduate student and the Dale Sayers Young Scientist Award, given every three years by the International XAFS Society. The Department of Physics also has established a lecture series in Sayers’ honor and named the primary lecture hall in its new space in Riddick Hall, the Dale E. Sayers Auditorium.

Dicky Morrison Undergraduate Meteorology Scholarship Endowment

Bob Morrison gave $73,000 to establish the Dicky Morrison Undergraduate Meteorology Scholarship Endowment in honor of his wife, a self-proclaimed weather geek, who is also a longtime fan of Greg Fishel, chief meteorologist at WRAL-TV in Raleigh. This is the College’s second meteorology scholarship and fills a significant need in a growth area.

Distinguished Professorships in Statistics

By donating $666,000 as part of the “Professorships On Sale” matching program, J. Stuart “Stu” Hunter helped to establish PAMS first-ever endowed professorships in statistics: the J. Stuart Hunter Distinguished Professorship and the Gertrude M. Cox Distinguished Professorship, named after the woman who founded the Department of Statistics. In so naming this endowment, Hunter simultaneously paid tribute to the roots of the department and helped secure its future success.
