NC State Math And Statistics > Before
“>” is the mathematical symbol for “greater than.” And it is easy to see that both NC State’s mathematics and statistics departments and a locally-based company named SAS are greater now than they were before. SAS was born out of an innovative project that began in NC State’s Department of Statistics more than 30 years ago. Now, the world’s leading business intelligence software company has seen to it that future Wolfpack statisticians and mathematicians have a fitting place to make their own groundbreaking discoveries.
Giving Goes Viral
Through a unique $2 million gift, an anonymous donor successfully inspired others to help establish distinguished professorships within the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (PAMS). Together, the college and donor decided to launch a “Professorships On Sale” program.
Nothing Static About Permanent Funding
Why does electricity make your hair stand on end? How do you make spaghetti dance? An anonymous $250,000 challenge grant, which ultimately raised over $750,000 in endowment funds for The Science House, advances the college’s mission of bolstering student enthusiasm for science by partnering with K-12 teachers to promote hands-on, inquiry-based science learning. Through student science enrichment activities, teacher training programs and curriculum-related programs, The Science House supports the state’s efforts to improve K-12 science and mathematics education.
Momentous Achievements - College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences
In 2004, the popular and widely respected professor Dale Sayers died unexpectedly. His wife, Anne, and his former students and colleagues joined to give $225,000 to establish the Dale E. Sayers Memorial Fund in honor of his memory… Bob Morrison gave $73,000 to establish the Dicky Morrison Undergraduate Meteorology Scholarship Endowment in honor of his wife, a self-proclaimed weather geek, who is also a longtime fan of Greg Fishel, chief meteorologist at WRAL-TV in Raleigh… By donating $666,000 as part of the “Professorships On Sale” matching program, J. Stuart “Stu” Hunter helped to establish PAMS first-ever endowed professorships in statistics: the J. Stuart Hunter Distinguished Professorship and the Gertrude M. Cox Distinguished Professorship.
