Nothing Static About Permanent Funding

Why does electricity make your hair stand on end? How do you make spaghetti dance? An anonymous $250,000 challenge grant, which ultimately raised over $750,000 in endowment funds for The Science House, advances the college’s mission of bolstering student enthusiasm for science by partnering with K-12 teachers to promote hands-on, inquiry-based science learning. Through student science enrichment activities, teacher training programs and curriculum-related programs, The Science House supports the state’s efforts to improve K-12 science and mathematics education.

In 2004, the popular and widely respected professor Dale Sayers died unexpectedly. His wife, Anne, and his former students and colleagues joined to give $225,000 to establish the Dale E. Sayers Memorial Fund in honor of his memory… Bob Morrison gave $73,000 to establish the Dicky Morrison Undergraduate Meteorology Scholarship Endowment in honor of his wife, a self-proclaimed weather geek, who is also a longtime fan of Greg Fishel, chief meteorologist at WRAL-TV in Raleigh… By donating $666,000 as part of the “Professorships On Sale” matching program, J. Stuart “Stu” Hunter helped to establish PAMS first-ever endowed professorships in statistics: the J. Stuart Hunter Distinguished Professorship and the Gertrude M. Cox Distinguished Professorship.
