Carroll Joyner had a vision. He wanted future generations of students and alumni to see the university that had given him so much. And when the doors to the new E. Carroll Joyner Visitor Center opened that vision became a reality.

The front door to NC State, the Joyner Visitor Center provides key information to potential NC State students and their families. The building’s 2,400-square-foot rotunda features interactive multimedia kiosks, a mini-theater, gallery space and a service desk with information about life at NC State and the surrounding area.

Campus tours and visits now originate from the building as well ensuring that future Wolfpack families can see the campus and community that inspired Carroll as well as get a true understanding of how NC State continues to make an impact throughout North Carolina and beyond.

Achieve! The Campaign for NC State was the most ambitious fund-raising campaign ever launched by North Carolina State University. This incredibly successful campaign, which raised more than $1.3 billion for NC State, is helping ensure our ability to transform lives today, and for generations to come, through teaching and research, as well as extension, engagement and economic development.

The goal for Student Support: $192 million.
The goal Achieved!: $205 million.

Contributions from 66,000 individuals and organizations mean we’re providing opportunities to aspiring minds from across the state and around the world with need- and merit-based scholarships and financial aid.

Students — one of our university’s greatest assets — come from every county in the state, every state in the nation and more than 100 countries. Students at NC State are expected to become engaged citizens who give back to the community, inspire others and become leaders in their chosen fields.

And because of your support, a diverse population of deserving students can successfully pursue jobs and lives not yet imagined.

The goal for Research Support: $275 million.
The goal Achieved!: $500 million.

Research efforts at NC State unearth ways to add value to agriculture, improve public health, advance technology and engineering while enhancing the quality of life. Today, these areas have grown to include technical pursuits unimaginable a generation ago. Made possible by your visionary support, our forwarding-thinking research has paid off.

Over the next decade, only a small number of first-tier research universities will have amassed the extensive human and capital resources necessary to sustain work on the most complex scientific and social issues facing us in the 21st century.

NC State is one of them.  Funding from the campaign will allow us to maintain our standing as a national model for academic research as we fulfill our potential as a premier research institution.

The goal for Outreach Support: $88 million.
The goal Achieved!: $114 million.

Outreach has long been an NC State tradition; after all, we are one of the nation’s finest land-grant institutions. The scope and promise of our achievements have never been greater — from plant genomics and biomanufacturing to sustainable forestry, from innovations in education to unique university, business and government partnerships.

We will continue to provide North Carolina’s taxpayers with real dividends, through education, extension and outreach programs that serve students in grades kindergarten through 12, and partnerships with individuals, communities and businesses that rely on the highest possible levels of expertise and resources for identifying innovative solutions to real-world problems.

At NC State, we value our heritage of public service and are committed to it as a priority. As do you. Because of the generosity and support shown to NC State, we’ve increased our public service and outreach efforts, producing powerful results in our own backyard — and around the globe.

The goal for Facility Support: $330 million.
The goal Achieved! $406 million.

While the adage to never judge a book by its cover still holds merit, when you’re a leading research university with a strong athletics program, you need to look your best. As our faculty, students, coaches, alumni and staff continue to elevate our national stature, so does our exponential need for top-notch facilities.

It’s simply the price you pay for achieving so much. Historically, bond financing for facilities has been a huge assist, but to keep pace with demands driven by our accomplishments, additional support has been needed. You responded.

The goal for Faculty Support: $78 million.
The goal Achieved!: $73 million.

All the shiny and new, state-art-of the art facilities filled with the nation’s brightest students are meaningless without faculty who teach, create, discover and inspire. Because teachers and scholars are the foundation of a university of distinction, high-quality teaching and research are at the core of NC State’s academic enterprise.

Endowed professorships made possible from the Campaign have allowed us to recruit and retain the very best faculty in an increasingly competitive market. Diverse and distinguished faculty who have produced major achievements, raising NC State’s profile and bringing us international acclaim.

Your faculty support keeps NC State poised to remain an institution of leaders and achievers.

The goal for Unrestricted Support: $37 million.
The goal Achieved!: $71 million.

True excellence and distinction requires nimbleness backed by adequate resources. One without the other often precludes seizing opportunities. For instances like these — newly emerging technologies and opportunities for partner collaboration, high-profile research projects — the university relies on flexible, annual funds.

These flexible, or unrestricted funds, also help us meet unforeseen challenges that could derail progress or cause a hiccup in momentum. You understood the big picture and saw the value.

When examined individually, the results of Achieve! The Campaign for NC State are astonishing. When examined collectively, the results are extraordinary. But, in the words of Chancellor Oblinger, “It’s not just the dollar amount raised or the square footage of space provided by the campaign that is so impressive — it is what these things bring to our campus that make them remarkable for NC State.”

What they bring is a transformation — a change that defines the new NC State University — now and in the future.

Because at NC State, while others wait for the future to arrive, we wait for it to catch up.

Dear NC State University Alumni and Friends:

On June 30, 2008, we officially marked the conclusion of the momentous—and historic—Achieve! The Campaign for NC State. I am very pleased to report that we raised more than $1.36 billion for new academic and athletic facilities, faculty research and outreach, as well as student scholarships and financial aid. We even met our $1 billion goal 19 months early. Now that’s an incredible achievement.

When we publicly launched this campaign in September 2005, our goal may have seemed daunting. After all, we had never attempted a campaign of this scale before, nor had many other public universities. Achieve! The Campaign for NC State has brought us to this long-anticipated — and deserved — new level, providing us with the opportunity to build on our strengths by realizing and capitalizing on our relevance and our impact as a leader in higher education.

Today, without question, we are the national leader we knew we could be. Thanks to gifts from more than 66,000 donors like you, we have transformed our campus and transformed the lives of students, professors, alumni, our community and business partners, and the many beneficiaries of our extensive outreach programs in the state and beyond.

We asked for your support and you responded. Specifically, you raised over $205 million to provide scholarship opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students. You created 68 new professorships. You raised $406 million to renovate or build facilities, including the impressive new Dorothy and Roy Park Alumni Center. You dedicated $500 million to research that will have a far-reaching impact on areas such as cancer research and applications of textile technology in healthcare and national defense. And we can direct $114 million to our extension and outreach programs, advancing K-12 education, agriculture, the arts and many other efforts throughout the state.

This is a very exciting time for the university as these transformations begin to carry NC State to a new level of excellence. I ask that you take pride in the fruits of your support and generosity. The response we received throughout the campaign was extraordinary. The stories you will find on the following pages are outstanding examples of how your contributions have created opportunities and changed lives. But these examples are by no means inclusive, as your enormous generosity could never be captured in one publication.

On behalf of the Achieve! Campaign for NC State Committee, the university, its faculty, students and staff, I thank you for all you have done to make this campaign and NC State the success that it is. While some were surprised when we surpassed not only our financial goal but also our timeframe to do so, these achievements did not surprise me. They only confirmed what I have known for quite some time, that at NC State we don’t wait for the future. We wait for it to catch up. After all, at NC State, “Red means go” and thanks to you, we’ve only just begun.

Sincerely,
James L. Oblinger
